During the 1970s ultrasonography developed along different paths in continental Eu rope and the English-speaking world. Whereas static imaging dominated the United Kingdom and North America, real-time examination performed by physicians was the norm in the Federal Republic of Germany and France. Francis Weill was uniquely able to bridge the gap between the two schools since he employed both techniques extensively. He made many important contributions to ab dominal ultrasonography during that decade, including the first descriptions of peri pancreatic vascular anatomy, the sonographic diagnostic features of obstructive jaun dice, and the localization of intraperitoneal fluid collections. During the past 20 years he has been working on an evolving textbook of gastroin testinal ultrasonography. This edition in English is the latest fruit of that effort. There are many textbooks of ultrasonography but very few are the work of a single author with a systematic, consistent, and thoroughly organized approach. Moreover, a work that has been crafted and refined by 20 years of clinical experience is certainly unique in this field. My relationship to this book began with the first English edition which I helped to translate from French. The current volume is a revised version of the most recent French edition, a book that we have found to be an invaluable reference in our de partment of radiological ultrasound for anyone who can manage a bit of French. The introduction of ultrasound has radically altered the clinical approach to patients with digestive diseases as it is now possible to observe the abdominal organs rapidly and noninvasively. This publication thoroughly covers the main applications of ultrasound in gastroenterology, with particular reference to the most recent progress in the field. The articles, contributed by leading international experts, are organized into three sections. The first section of the book focuses on the applications of transabdominal and intraoperative ultrasound in the diagnosis of diseases of the liver and pancreas. A further section deals with interventional ultrasound where the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma by alcoholization or laser is one of the topics of interest. Recent applications of ultrasound are discussed in the final section: the study of the abdominal vessels with duplex and color Doppler receives extensive coverage and other contributions consider new developments in endoscopic ultrasound and contrast agents. Attention is also given to the use of ultrasound in patients with HIV and AIDS. Given ultrasound's importance today, this book is essential reading for radiologists, gastroenterologists, internists and surgeons.

This book is an introduction for students and young doctors at the beginning of their career in diagnostic ultrasonography. It also presents the latest in innovations and techniques in gastrointestinal ultrasonography. The reader will find basic aspects of ultrasonography as well as highly advanced technical and research papers. The first category will be easy to understand for most readers. The second category may require some preparation from the student. All advanced papers represent the frontiers of knowledge. The first few chapters deal with the basic principles of ultrasound and its use in tissue characterization. They are followed by chapters on the use of ultrasound for the characterization of tissue biomechanics and on novel techniques such as 3D ultrasound and hydrosonography. The clinical applications are outlined in the last few chapters of the book.
